Johnny Cash Homage Booklet

Role: Designer

  • Typography wasn’t always my favorite part of design. When I first began my job at Compass, I was offered the opportunity to take a typography course by Seattle’s best, Jeff Barlow at The School of Visual Concepts. The course was 10-weeks long and over that time I became infatuated with the typography world.

The final project for the course was to create an editorial piece of Johnny Cash’s last album, “American Dream IV: The Man Comes Around.” We were instructed to cover all songs in both lyrical and poetic forms and create a piece that was “museum” worthy.

    • Minimum 20+ page spread done with traditional french folding

    • Illustrations and Custom Artwork

    • A BEAUTIFUL BOOK THAT TELLS THE STORY OF JOHNNY CASH’S DETERIORATING HEALTH IN THE FINAL YEARS OF HIS LIFE.

“…but when he heard the song and saw the video for the first time, Reznor said he was deeply moved and found Cash's cover (of ‘Hurt’) beautiful and meaningful, going as far as to say "that song isn't mine anymore."”

“I wear this crown of thorns upon my liar’s chair. Full of broken thoughts, I cannot repair.”–Excerpt from “Hurt.”
